Every day, people are creating perceptions and making  assumptions about you based on what youre telling them. If youre sending the message that youve been short-changed, passed over or stepped on in your career, then people will see you as someone who doesnt have much value in the workplace. BUT(!)  if youre send a strong, clear message that youre a key contributor with some big successes under your belt, then  managers, hiring managers and Sr. leaders  will be more likely to give you job leads, job offers and bigger career opportunities. Here are a few tips to help you frame your career story Stop being so humble. Being humble  is a career stifller. Yes, it’s a nice quality to have, but if you never talk about some of the successes you’ve had in the workplace, then your career is sure to sit on a shelf for the next 10 years. I had lunch yesterday with one of my best friends from college, Arizona State University (Go Sun Devils! :))  who became an Emmy winning TV news reporter for NBC-TV in  Phoenix.   Now, at 50-years old, he has his own company  AZ Freelance TV advising Corporate leaders as a Media Strategist. He  told me  that he’s ready to expand his business, but Im not the type of person to brag about myself.    This is a man who has interviewed three (3) U.S. Presidents (Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.) Seriously? How would anyone ever know to hire him if he didnt talk about his successes? Talking about your accomplishments builds your credibility. It lets people know what you’re good at, what you can handle and what you can accomplish. It makes you stand out from the crowd. If you want to get noticed, then you’ll need to learn how to talk about your achievements, not in an arrogant kind of way, but more in an I’m a key contributor who gets big results kind of way. Write down 2-3 of your biggest achievements over the past three years. Now, practice saying out loud in a sentence or two how you contributed to those successes and what the impact was to the organization. For example, I was the technical lead for a new internal tool that was launched on the SAP platform. The tool is now saving the  group $100,000 a year. Or, I was on the creative marketing campaign for the xyz product which helped the company gain 3% more market share. The key to getting more job offers, leads and opportunities is leaning how to talk about your successes. Nobody will know what you’ve accomplished unless you tell them. 2. Frame your story in a positive way. One of my favorite chapters in my new book, The Bounce Back gives strategies on how to frame your story to hiring managers after you’ve been laid off or experienced a career setback. Managers, Sr. leaders, customers, and hiring managers create their perception of you based on what you tell them. If you talk about your career in a positive, confident way â€" then they are going to think of you as a positive and confident employee. Earlier in my career I was laid off at a small advertising agency.   A few months later, I bounced back and was hired as the Regional Marketing Manager for a Fortune 100 company. I believe that a large part of the reason I was hired was because of the way I told my career story to the Vice President. During the interview, I talked about how the company that laid me off was a great company and how much I loved my role and responsibilities. I truly believed in what I was saying and so my tone was very genuine. Then, I addressed the reason for my layoff which was, I didn’t realize when I took the position that I was expected to fill the shoes of two employees. Even though I had some big results and was good at my job, I just simply couldn’t fill both of their shoes. The VP called me the next day to tell me I was hired. Everybody has setbacks in their career.   E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y.  Its not the setback that holds you back, but how you internalize the setback. The key is to frame your career story in the most positive, honest and confident way possible. 3. Don’t take yourself out of the game because you fumbled. I had a TV interview a few months ago and the reporter asked about my book. I froze up. I got nervous, said umm and garbled out a few lame sentences. Man-oh-man, I wish I could have a do-over. It happens to all of us. Whether it’s a job interview, a big presentation or the perfect networking opportunity â€" sometimes, we just freeze up. It happens, and it happens to everyone. The key is not to beat yourself up. And don’t shy away from future opportunities to give a big presentation or go on job interviews. The lesson is to learn from the situation and then do better next time. Keep  looking for opportunities to step into the spotlight and tell your story again and again. If you fumbled a presentation, then go ask the team leader if you can present it again with some new data that you just received. If you fumbled a job  interview, then send an e-mail to the interviewer providing a little more clarity on your experience or area of expertise. As a firefighter you have a responsibility to keep the community safe and promote knowledge of fire risk prevention. It is a demanding job, but also a rewarding one. What follows are the entry requirements and training necessary to become a firefighter in the UK. A Firefighters Salary The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has established a national salary structure for all firefighters. The typical starting salary for a trainee firefighter is 21,157. However, this rises to 28,199 after all the required training is completed. There is a well structured career path set out for firefighters which means anybody with the determination to do so can advance through constant training and development. Entry Requirements to Become a Firefighter There are no formal educational requirements to become a firefighter, although good GCSEs in Maths, Science and English will strengthen your application. However, there are a number of vocationally-oriented degree courses offered by UK universities in the areas of fire safety and risk management, fire engineering and disaster management that are very useful qualifications to have when applying for a job as a firefighter. You must be aged 18 years or older to apply to be a firefighter. You must also have good eye sight and hearing and will be asked to provide a full medical history to prove you are suitable for the fire and rescue service. During the application process you will have to successfully complete a series of National Firefighter Ability (NFA) tests and a National Firefighter Questionnaire (NFQ). The NFA written tests cover the areas of working with numbers, understanding information and situational awareness and problem solving. Once these written tests are successfully completed you will have to complete a series of rigorous physical tests wearing a full firefighter uniform. These include coping in a confined space, ladder carrying and lifting, assembling and carrying equipment and casualty evacuation. You will usually also need to possess a full UK driving licence. There are a number of websites similar to How2Become.com that offer additional help and provide information on how you can pass the fitness and assessment elements of your test. Firefighter Training The initial firefighter training period lasts approximately 12 to 16 weeks and is extremely intensive. Prior to application it is a good idea to get yourself in excellent physical shape. At a special training centre you will learn essential basic firefighting skills using crucial equipment like hoses, ladders and breathing apparatus. You will undergo continuous training and will be required to study hard. Assessors closely monitor your progress before moving you on to learning first aid and engaging in simulated fire scenarios. After successfully completing your training you will be placed in a fire station for a probationary period in which you will be continuously assessed throughout a two year development programme. Following this development training you will be required to attend frequent lectures and training exercises to ensure you continue to develop and progress. There are excellent career advancement opportunities in the fire service, which has a clear and well structured career ladder. With enough drive and commitment, you can have an incredible career as a firefighter and genuinely make a difference within your community. If youre wondering how you can improve your body language at the office, read on.Why Should I Care About Body Language?You get your work done, you do it well, and youre even careful about how you choose your words in emails and in meetings. However, according to Dudley, thats not enough.Studies show that if subjects are given the choice between what they hearwords and voice toneand what they seebody languagewhen being sent a mixed message, they go with the visual component 100% of the time, she says.If you know youre joking, but a colleague doesnt, its going to be easier for them to figure out if youre smiling than if you keep a deadpan face.As Dudley explains, over half of the components that we use to communicate are visual. With seven components total, four are visual and three are auditory. In other words, what people see from you during an in-part conversation often has more weight than what they hear.Body language is like a huge sign you wear around your neck, written in a language thats easily decipherable by your coworkers, bosses, customers, and clients, says Dudley.What Do I Need To Pay Attention To?The four visual components that make up your body language and that you need to be aware of are facial expression, eye contact, posture, and hand gestures.You may not even be aware of your posture most of the time, and youre not alone in that. Slouching over in an office chair is certainly not unusual, nor is crossing your arms when youre sitting or standing. Facial expressions might not be something youve ever thought about trying to controlheck, you might even think youre keeping a straight face. For some people, controlling facial expressions is very difficult.But to make sure you are conveying the message you want to, whether it be the immediate message you are speaking about or the overall message about your professionalism, you need to be paying attention to what your facial expression is, what your posture is, where youre looking, and what youre doing with your hands.As Dudley explains, even a shrug of the shoulders that lasts less than a second can impart a negative message to the partie yo ure talking to. It takes time to change habits like crossing your arms, slouching your shoulders, or looking across the room, but it can be done.Five Ways to Improve Your Body LanguageOnce youve recognized that you might be sending negative messages with your body language, you need to figure out what you can shift and just departure practicing it. Literally, practicing it. She lays out four aspects of body language to work on and practice improving.1) Dudley suggests working on having an open facial expression that you deliberately use to convey that you are listening. To develop it, she recommends standing in front of a mirror and practicing your expression until you know what it feels like so that you know how to keep it in place while youre talking to a person without the crutch of a mirror. An open facial expression may look different from person to person, but it is important that you ensure you arent frowning or looking concerned. If youre trying to understand a concept, its very easy to slip into a concerned face, or what you might also think of as a hard-thinking face, but that can instead convey that you are worried about whats being said. With an open facial expression, accompanied by eye contact and occasional nods, you will find conversation flows more easily and you are better received by your colleague.2) Additionally, Dudley says that leaning forward while you listen can help convey your interest in the conversation. Dont lean forward so that youre uncomfortably close or invading their personal bubblethat would show interest but also probably scare your colleague a bit. To figure out what your leaning forward listening pose should be, Dudley suggests that you think about how you listen when youre hearing something significant. Do you incline your head and slightly tilt one of your ears toward the speaker? Do you take a half step forward? Determine this, and youll have determined the most natural leaning posture for you.3) You also need to find the right balance of eye contact. A staredown wont be productive, but neither will looking away like youre completely disinterested and disengaged. When youre in conversation with someone, Dudley says that, ideal, assertive eye contact involves looking directly at the person, mostly, and breaking eye contact just a little. Making eye contact conveys engagement in the conversation, but also makes you seem confident. Ever had a conversation with someone who was looking at their hands or shifting their eyes back and forth the whole time? You probably thought of them in one of two waysthat they were shy and nervous, or that they were untrustworthy. As the old saying goes, the eyes are the window to the soul, so be conscious of what yours are doing during a conversation.4) Mirroring is the next tactic that Dudley recommends for honing your body language skills. No, mirroring isnt like playing the childrens (annoying) game where they repeat everything you say and copy what you do. Instead , its a way to build trust by subtly reflecting that you and the person you are talking to are similar in nature. Little things like crossing legs, or even using one or two of the same verbal tics they use can build trust without them even fully processing that you are mirroring them. Again, the important thing here is subtlety. Dont turn it into a game of Simon Says, but just learn to be aware if there is a gesture or posture you can imitate. You might even be doing this subconsciously already and be surprised to find yourself doing it already once you start paying attention. There are countless studies on the positive effects of smiling lowered cortisol levels, increased serotonin levels, lowered blood pressure, l owered heart rate, muscle relaxation, increased blood flow to the brainfor both the smiler and the smilee explains Dudley. In a business setting, just having a small smile on your face when everyone else seems to be stressed out and grumpy can make you the approachable one in the office. The next time you enter a stressful conversation, try opening with a handshake and a smile. Chances are, it wont weaken your position as much as it will put the other person at ease and make the conversation a little bit easier.ConclusionAs important as it is, body language can be tough to control and tough to change after years of subconsciously acting in a certain way. But once you take an assessment of your body language and start to make small changes, those will become habit and you will be conveying a more confident, more approachable self at work.However, with that said, this article is just a start on the topic of body language.
